Car Detailing FAQs — Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
Below are the 14 most common questions we hear from San Diego drivers before booking a detail. If your question isn't here, text or call us at (858) 758-3528 — we usually respond within an hour.
1. How much does car detailing cost in San Diego?
Car detailing prices at Flat Out Detailing range from $168 for an exterior detail up to $1,299+ for a ceramic coating package. Most complete details fall between $248 and $298, depending on vehicle size and condition.
Standard pricing tiers (sedan base):
- Interior Detail: from $188
- Exterior Detail: from $168
- Complete Detail (interior + exterior): from $248
- Light Paint Correction: from $599
- Heavy Paint Correction: from $799
- Ceramic Coating (CRYSTAL+ / PRO+ / MAX G+): $799 – $1,299
Larger vehicles (SUVs, trucks, minivans) add $10–$50 for detailing and $50–$200 for ceramic coating. Heavily soiled interiors with pet hair, sand, or stains may require additional time. Text us a few photos of your vehicle for an exact quote within 15 minutes.
2. How long does a car detail take?
A premium full detail takes about 3 hours for a standard sedan. Larger vehicles, heavier soil, and additional services extend the timeline:
- Maintenance wash: 1–1.5 hours
- Interior detail only: 2–4 hours
- Exterior detail only: 1.5–3 hours
- Full detail (interior + exterior): 2.5–4 hours
- Paint correction: +2–6 hours depending on severity
- Ceramic coating application: +4–9 hours, plus 24–72 hour cure window
We give you an accurate time estimate when booking so you can plan your day. Mobile appointments include arrival/setup time; in-shop appointments don't.
3. What's the difference between a car wash and a car detail?
A car wash is a quick surface clean. Detailing is a deep restoration of every surface inside and out. The two services aren't really comparable — one takes 10 minutes, the other takes 3+ hours.
A typical $15 car wash removes loose dirt from the exterior. A professional detail at Flat Out includes hand washing, paint decontamination, clay bar treatment, polishing or paint correction, sealant or wax application, full interior vacuuming, steam cleaning, leather conditioning, stain removal, odor neutralization, and detailing of every nook and crevice from door jambs to vents to under seats. The result is a vehicle that looks and smells like it just rolled off the showroom floor — and stays that way for months instead of days.
4. Do you offer mobile car detailing? What areas do you serve?
Yes — Flat Out Detailing offers full mobile car detailing throughout San Diego County, plus a physical shop in Sorrento Valley. Our mobile unit arrives with its own water, power, and professional-grade equipment, so we can detail your vehicle at your home, office, or anywhere else that works for you.
Most-served neighborhoods include:
- Coastal: La Jolla, Del Mar, Pacific Beach, Point Loma, Coronado, Solana Beach, Encinitas
- Central: Sorrento Valley, Sorrento Mesa, Mira Mesa, University City (UTC), Clairemont, Mission Hills
- North/East: Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Scripps Ranch, Poway, Carlsbad
Mobile service availability depends on schedule and location. If you're outside the typical service area, give us a call — we often accommodate special requests.
5. How often should I get my car detailed?
For most San Diego drivers, we recommend a full detail 2 to 3 times per year, with maintenance washes monthly or bi-monthly between full details. The right frequency depends on how and where you drive:
- Daily commuters: Full detail every 4 months, maintenance wash monthly
- Weekend drivers / garaged vehicles: Full detail twice a year
- Coastal parking (La Jolla, Del Mar, PB): More frequent — salt air accelerates oxidation
- Pets and kids in the car: More frequent interior detailing
- Ceramic-coated vehicles: Full detail every 6 months, maintenance washes every 2–4 weeks
Maintenance plan members get scheduled details automatically — most book monthly or bi-monthly so they never have to think about it.
6. Is professional auto detailing worth it?
Yes, if you keep your car for more than a year or care about resale value. Professional detailing protects two specific things money was already spent on — your paint and your interior — and the cost is small relative to the vehicle's value.
Concretely:
- Resale value: A well-maintained vehicle with documented detailing history sells for noticeably more than one with faded paint and stained interior
- Paint protection: San Diego's UV index (8–11 in summer), 266+ sunny days, and coastal salt air actively damage unprotected clear coat year-round
- Interior preservation: Leather cracks, dashboards fade, and fabric stains permanently when neglected — all preventable
- Time savings: A 3-hour professional detail accomplishes more than 8+ hours of DIY work, with better results
- Driving experience: Most owners say a freshly detailed car genuinely makes them happier daily
For lease vehicles approaching turn-in, detailing often pays for itself by avoiding wear-and-tear charges. For luxury and exotic owners, ceramic coating alone can preserve thousands of dollars of value.
7. How long does ceramic coating last?
Ceramic coating from Flat Out Detailing lasts 3 years to a lifetime, depending on the package tier and how the vehicle is maintained. Our three main tiers:
- CRYSTAL+ (up to 3 years): Entry-level SiO2 formulation. Best for leased vehicles or short ownership. From $799.
- PRO+ (6-year warranty): Higher-solids ceramic with better UV and chemical resistance. Best for daily drivers. From $999.
- MAX G+ (lifetime warranty): Top-tier multi-layer coating with maximum gloss and longest warranty. Best for vehicles you plan to keep long-term. From $1,299.
Real-world longevity also depends on maintenance. Hand washing every 2–4 weeks with pH-neutral soap, avoiding automatic touch car washes, and removing bird droppings and tree sap promptly all extend the coating's life. Done right, the coating typically outlasts its rated warranty period.
8. Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating?
In almost every case, yes. Ceramic coating bonds permanently to whatever surface it's applied to — if there are swirl marks, scratches, or oxidation underneath, the coating locks them in for its entire life.
Skipping paint correction means you're sealing in damage instead of perfection. After 5+ years of looking at swirls under glossy ceramic, you'd have to chemically strip the coating to fix the paint underneath, which is expensive and unnecessary.
Every ceramic coating package at Flat Out includes the right level of paint correction for your vehicle's condition — we never charge for correction you don't need. For most daily drivers, single-stage correction is enough. For heavily swirled or oxidized paint, we recommend multi-stage correction. We assess your paint in person before quoting.
9. Can you remove pet hair, stains, and odors?
Yes — pet hair removal, stain removal, and odor elimination are core parts of our interior detailing. Different problems require different techniques:
- Pet hair: Commercial-grade vacuums, specialized rubber brushes that create static charge, and steam treatment loosen and extract embedded hair from carpets, upholstery, and hard-to-reach areas
- Stains: Hot-water extraction at 150°F for fabric, pH-balanced cleaners for leather. Most fresh spills come out completely. Older or set-in stains may lighten substantially but not always fully remove
- Pet odors: Enzyme-based treatments that break down odor compounds at the source, plus ozone treatment for severe cases
- Smoke smell: Deep clean to remove physical residue, then ozone treatment that neutralizes odor molecules at a molecular level rather than masking them
- Mold/mildew: Antimicrobial treatments common in San Diego's marine climate
Heavily soiled interiors may add 1–2 hours of labor. We always inspect first and explain any add-ons before starting work.
10. What's included in a full detail?

11. Are you family-owned? How long have you been in business?
Yes — Flat Out Detailing is family-owned and was founded in 2022 by Felipe. Felipe grew up around cars; his father was a Brazilian race car driver in the 1970s, and that passion for vehicles passed down to him directly.
When Felipe moved to San Diego, he saw a gap in the local detailing market — a lot of options, but very few that matched the level of care he gave his own vehicles. So he started Flat Out to fill that gap.
Since 2022, we've serviced more than 2,000 vehicles in the San Diego area and earned over 100 five-star reviews on Google. We've stayed family-owned on purpose — it means every vehicle gets owner-level attention, every customer relationship matters, and we take pride in the work the way only the people building the business can.
12. Do you detail Teslas, Porsches, and luxury or exotic vehicles?
Yes — luxury, exotic, and electric vehicles are a big part of what we do. We've worked on Porsche 911 GT3RSs, Lamborghini Uruses, Range Rovers, Teslas across all models, BMW M-series, Mercedes-AMG, Audi RS, and various Ferraris and McLarens.
Different vehicles need different approaches:
- Tesla: Tesla's water-based paint is softer than traditional clear coats. We use softer polishing pads and lighter compounds to avoid additional marring
- European luxury (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi): Specific clear-coat thickness requirements. We measure clear-coat depth before any correction work
- Exotics (Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren): Often single-stage paints requiring extra care. Specialized products and slower techniques
- Classics: Single-stage paints from the 60s/70s/80s respond differently to modern compounds. We adjust accordingly
If you have a specific make and model you're concerned about, mention it when booking and we'll walk you through our exact approach.
13. What payment methods do you accept? Do you offer maintenance plans?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), debit cards, and cash. Payment is collected after the service is complete and you've inspected the work — we don't take payment upfront. For ceramic coating bookings, a small deposit may be required to reserve the appointment time and account for product costs.
Maintenance plans are available for monthly or bi-monthly detailing at a reduced rate. These are popular with luxury vehicle owners, busy professionals, and families who want consistent care without scheduling each appointment individually. Plans include priority scheduling and locked-in pricing for the duration of the plan.
Multi-vehicle discounts apply when we detail two or more vehicles at the same address in the same visit. Fleet pricing is available for commercial accounts. Contact us for specific maintenance plan rates and fleet quotes.
